The Annual Festival of Karelian Peoples 8 to 9 April 2017

Karjalan Sivistysseura – Karelia Cultural Society (established in 1906) has a long tradition in organising Annual Festivals of Karelian Peoples. This year we will be celebrating Voknavolok, the Cultural Capital of Finno-Ugric People in 2017.

The Festival with various events will take place in Helsinki, venue Hotel Arthur, Vuorikatu 19.

Free entry, small charge for tea and coffee on Saturday evening, lunch and Gala Event coffee on Sunday, registration required, please use the form (Finnish only)

Saturday 8 April

10.30 Kyykkä – the Karelian Skittles on the sports grounds of Kaisaniemi

from 11 to 15.30 gatherings of regional and family associations

16.00 Annual general meeting of Karjalan Sivistysseura

19.30 Karelian Tea and Storytelling Evening

  • ecumenical blessing
  • tea and coffee with Karelian pies (10 euros)
  • Kataja Ensemble from Voknavolok singing Karelian songs
  • Folk Ensemble Karjala from Petrozavodsk performing Karelian dances
  • Voknavolok in the past and today, history, stories and pictures by Olga Karlova, Julia Filippova and Kai Peksujeff

Sunday 9 April

9.00-11.30 Clinic open for genealogists

11.30-12.45 Feast of Karelian Peoples (11.90 euros), Hotel Arthur, Restaurant

13.00-16.00 Gala Event of Karelian Peoples

  • Karelian music by Kataja Ensemble from Voknavolok
  • Maari Kallberg singing songs recorded from Santra Remšujeva, legendary singer and story teller
  • Karelian dances by Folk Ensemble Karjala from Petrozavodsk
  • Addresses by Karelian and Finno-Ugric partner organisations Karjalan Rahvaan Liitto, Oma Mua Journal, Nuori Karjala and MAFUN
  • Gala Presentation given by Professor Anneli Sarhimaa
  • coffee (9.50 euros)
